maybe try updating the bootloader...

but: if you remove the sd card, and power up, and do not see the diagnostic display, check your HDMI cabling.
(i hope you are not using an adapter.... they cause problems.)

I have tried reflashing the bootloader with SD card mode. It does not even boot successfully into that stage. The pi just shuts down before I ever see any green blinking or green success screen.

Regarding using an adapter, I am using an adapter, but I do not think that is the issue at hand because I am using that exact adapter on another pi and the screen is working perfectly fine.
