The DIMM connector adds 40 cents. Some months the price of a memory module is actually lower than the separate memory chips, sometimes higher. Large module manufacturers play all sort of games in buying on the spot market when prices are low and living with excess inventory for a while. Have a look at https://www.dramexchange.com/ if you want to dig deeper.Maybe if they were striving to produce the lowest cost computers for home users but, even then, I can't see it actually saving a user that much. It would make product with RAM fitted more expensive, and I can't see there being a business case for it. Most people are willing to pay a small premium to get something guaranteed to work than try to save pennies and take the risk that it won't.Actually a standard DIMM connector would be better as they could then sell it at various memory levels, including a cheapest 'no RAM' solution as the world is awash with smaller memory modules removed from PCs.
It also has to be said that an awful lot of memory goes to landfill or bottom drawers.
